GPS logging for Symbian phones
It seems that when you’ve installed Python on your Symbian handset, you’ll get the best applications. Today I found a great piece of software that uses the internal GPS device of a mobile or an external GPS mouse to track your way: pygpslog.
The installation of the software is a real pain in the ass, because several components need to be downloaded, signed (with Symbian signed) and installed on the mobile. You’ll need 15 minutes for this procedure. After you’re done, you can track your way easily. The program stores GPX files on the device’s memory card which can be sent to a computer and finally imported to e.g. Google Earth. I just tried this and I’m pretty amazed

Wordmobi – Blogging with a mobile phone
I always wanted to have an application that allows me to blog from my mobile phone. Unfortunately Nokia doesn’t ship its handsets with such an application – other manufacturers do so (sometimes). Up to now I only knew an application called ShoZu. ShoZu isn’t only a software you install on your mobile, ShoZu is also an online service that acts as some sort of “proxy” between your mobile and your blog. So the ShoZu client doesn’t publish directly to the blog, but it sends the post to the online service and the service pushes the post to the blog. This might have some oppertunities as the support of a plethora of blogging engines and other social networking sites but also requires that you hand over the password to your blog to the ShoZu service. A pretty odd feeling…
Well, I tested ShoZu with a test blog hosted on wordpress.com and found out, that the software works well. But somehow it is also very bloated and not really easy to understand. It also adds some functionality to parts of the mobile as the camera. Sometimes – I couldn’t figure out exactly when- ShoZu comes to life and asks if you want the publish the picture taken a moment ago on your blog. Unfortunately you can’t control this, so I deinstalled Shozu pretty fast.
Some time ago I read about a Python based Wordpress client for Symbian. (Python is a programming langauge that is, like Java, more or less platform independant. Like for Java, Python runtime environments exist for multiple Symbian S60 based mobiles). I don’t know really why, but I didn’t test the software called Wordmobi up to now. Today I installed Python (click here to read more) and Wordmobi and I got a really good first impression.
After setting up the connection to my blog (btw: wordmobi only works for Wordpress blogs) I entered the “Posts” menu and was able to update the list of available posts on my blog:
This works pretty well. You can even edit and republish existing posts. Cool. The next step was to test if the creation of new posts works, too.
Well, it seems so. You can also add stuff like lists or images to a post. If you select “image” Wordmobi asks if an existing picture should be selected or if you want to take a new one. I took a new one and it worked! 
For me, Wordmobi is the first application that I really can use to write short posts using my mobile. I don’t know if this is really a thing you want (and need) to do, but I feel that this could be fun *g* Btw: you can see the test post I wrote here.

Irgendwie scheint Google gerade zu spinnen. Egal was ich in die Suchmaske eintippe, jedes Ergebnis bekommt den Stempel “Potentiell böse Seite” aufgedruckt…

How to use a TPM with Ubuntu
For my work I (have to) use the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). This is a certain type of crypto chip located on a computer’s mainboard. Some people claim it’s a wicked piece of hardware, created by the government, Bill Gates, the music industry, etc. to overtake one’s computer (yepp, you can find stuff like this in the internet). I say it’s a technology you can use for good or for bad purposes. But I don’t want to argue about this here actually 
I simply need one to work with.
Up to now I have always built my own TPM-enabled kernel that also included the IBM IMA patch. Yesterday I found out that if you need the TPM only everything gets much easier. Simply load the kernel modules and start the tcsd (the trusted computing deamon that provides access to the TPM) and you’re done.
First login as root
> sudo -s
and install Trousers and the TPM Tools:
> apt-get install tpm-tools trousers
Head to the directory where the Kernel modules are located /lib/modules/2.x.y-z-generic/kernel/drivers/char/tpm, there you’ll find the modules you need:
> ls -la /lib/modules/2.x.y-z-generic/kernel/drivers/char/tpm

If tpm_tis doesn’t work on your machine, simply use trial and error for finding the right module. You can’t damage stuff. Btw: if you like to load the Kernel module automatically, edit /etc/modules and add “tpm_tis” to the list of modules.
If you’ve got the right module loaded, start the tcsd. Notice: unlike to other distributions you can’t invoke the tcsd in Ubuntu by
> /etc/init.d/tcsd start
You need to type
> tcsd
If you like some debugging info, add -f:
> tcsd -f
Now you’re ready to go:
> tpm_version
TPM 1.2 Version Info:
Chip Version: 1.2.11.5
Spec Level: 2
Errata Revision: 0
TPM Vendor ID: ATML

Now you can take ownership of your TPM:

Podcasts für Nokia Handies
Vorhin habe ich ein wenig in der Bedienungsanleitung meines E71 geblättert (gutes Mittel um Features zu finden, die man nach 2 Wochen rumspielen noch immer nicht gefunden hat) und bin dabei auf den Nokia Podcatcher gestoßen. Eigentlich eine nette Sache.
Für die, die Podcasts nicht kennen: Podcasts sind Audio- und/oder Video-Schnipsel die man über’s Internet herunterladen und dann ansehen kann. Ähnlich wie die Beiträge eines Blogs, erscheinen die Podcasts mehr oder weniger regelmäßig und können abonniert werden. Das Programm das dazu gebraucht wird, nennt sich Podcatcher.
Nach ein paar Klicks habe ich ein im Nokia Podcatcher die Verzeichnis-Funktion gefunden und (jaja!) damit den Sesame Street Podcast abonniert. Funktioniert super, ist aber auch super sinnlos. Leider findet sich in dem von Nokia gepflegten Verzeichnis nichts, was man in der Praxis auch wirklich ansehen wollen würde.
Nach etwas zusätzlichem Klicken finde ich im Podcasting Programm auch ein Feature, mit dem man ein OPML-Verzeichnis abonnieren kann. Das wiederum ist eine Art “gelbe Seiten” für Podcasts. Woher bekommt man aber so ein OPML-Verzeichnis? Zum Beispiel vom deutschen Podcasting-Verzeichnisdienst Podcast.de.
Podcast.de listet einerseits kiloweise Podcasts auf und bietet andererseits an, dass man aus einer selbst getroffenen Auswahl aller Podcasts so ein OPML bauen kann. Dazu braucht man erst einmal einen Podcast.de Account, wählt dann aus der Gesamtliste ein paar interessante Podcasts aus, geht dann auf “Meine abonnierten Podcasts” und klickt relativ weit unten auf “Export”. Man wählt nun OPML und in der Adresszeile des Browsers erscheint etwas derartiges:
http://www.podcast.de/opml/podcasts/abonnierte/benutzer/BENUTZERNAME.opml
Diese URL tippt man im Podcasting Programm in “Verzeichnisse” -> “Optionen” -> “Neu” -> “Internet-Verzeichnis” ein (wohl dem, der eine “richtige” Tastatur am Handy hat 
) und aktualisiert die Liste.
Eh voila: jetzt abonniert man noch die einzelnen Podcasts und kann fix sein Handy mit Filmchen füttern!
Ich brauche ganz fix ein paar Gigabytes mehr Speicher im Handy.
Ständig laut surrende Festplatte im Alu-Macbook II
Heute habe ich mal bei Apple angerufen und denen mein Problem geschildert… (Klar, zum Händler gehen ist sicherlich besser, aber dazu müsste man ja in die Stadt fahren). Um es kurz zu machen: das Telefonat war relativ zäh. Die freundliche Dame am Telefon wiegelte mich mit einer lustigen Standard-Prozedur ab. Ich soll dies und jenes tun und wenn das nicht hilft, soll ich zu einem Apple Service Provider (oder wie das auch immer in Apple Sprech heißt) gehen. Die Prozedur alf aber natürlich nicht.

Ständig laut surrende Festplatte im Alu-Macbook
Ich bin ein wenig irritiert: die Festplatte meines neuen Alu-Mac Books wird irgendwie immer lauter und lauter. Ich halte das eigentlich für ein normales Betriebsgeräusch (monotones Summen vom Festplatten-Motor, kein “Schlagen” wie es vor einem Plattencrash auftritt) aber die Geräusche werden halt immer lauter. Irgendwie so, als würde der Lüfter ständig auf 100% laufen. Langsam aber sicher nervt mich das wie Sau.
Anfangs war von der Festplatte absolut nichts zu hören, einige Zeit später fiel mir die Platte das erste Mal auf. Spassigerweise wurde dieses Geräusch komplett unterdrückt, sobald ich leicht auf die rechte Seite des Gehäuses drückte. Mittlerweile kann man drücken wo und wie lange man will, das Surren surrt weiter.
Ich glaub’ ich geh mal am Samstag Menschen im Mac Store in München nerven. Mal schau’n was passiert…
Nokia E71 – Ein Resümee nach 2 Wochen
Mein Nokia E71 ist jetzt seit etwas über 2 Wochen im Einsatz, einen ersten Bericht darüber habe ich ja schon geschrieben. Jetzt ist es an der Zeit meinen obligatorischen 2-Wochen Rückblick zu schreiben.
Das GPS war eines der beiden Kaufargumente und funktioniert tatsächlich erstklassig. Es ist ein wirklich super praktisches Feature. Klar, Google Maps funktioniert auch ohne GPS gut und zeigt auf ein paar Hundert Meter “genau” an, wo man sich befindet. Das reicht aus, um z.B. Restaurants, Bars usw. in der Nähe zu suchen…
… gerade aber in unbekanntem Terrain (= neulich in Berlin) war mir das GPS von großem Nutzen: Eine echte Navi-Software ist im E71 zwar nicht enthalten (kann aber natürlich gekauft und installiert werden, z.B. Mobile Navigator), man kann sich aber auch wie folgt behelfen: Über Google Maps sucht man sich sein Ziel (Ort, Straße, Hausnummer, was auch immer) heraus und speichert es in den Orts-Favoriten. Im Handy ist ein Programm integriert, das Richtung und Entfernung zu diesen Favoriten anzeigen kann. D.h. man schlägt sich einfach in die Richtung durch, in die der rote Punkt weist. Das ist vollkommen ausreichend um von der U-Bahn Haltestelle zum 3 Blocks entfernten Hotel zu gelangen. (Ok, das Szenario im Bild unten verlangt dann wohl doch ein “echtes” Navi (und ein Auto) *g*)
Die vollständige Tastatur ist wie erwartet das Killer-Feature des Handies überhaupt und wirklich ein Kaufargument. Endlich lassen sich Notizen (Einkaufszettel ade!), Kalender, Webbrowser und Mailclient sinnvoll nutzen und bedienen. Fix im Internet einen Fahrplan raussuchen wird so wirklich möglich und man kann sich auch mal über Mail und Chat mit Leuten austauschen. Mehr als brauchbar! Für die Gemeinde der Mac-User: ja, das Handy lässt sich per iSync mit dem Kalender und Adressbuch des Macs synchronisieren. Klappt wunderbar.
Etwas meckern muss ich aber über die Firmware, zumindest über die bei der Auslieferung installierte 100.x.y.z Version. Wer die noch installiert hat, sollte unbedingt mittels des Nokia Updaters eine neuere Version holen. Die 100.x.y.z ist übelst instabil. Ich habe haufenweise Abstürze bzw. Freezes erlebt, falls der Kontakt zum UMTS-Netz abbricht während Daten geschaufelt wurden. Um solche Freezes zu beheben, musste ich immer den Akku ausbauen und neu einsetzen. Seit dem ich vor ein paar Tagen auf 110.x.y.z upgedated habe, ist solch ein Absturz nicht mehr vorgekommen. Auch läuft das Handy mit neuer Firmware flotter. Vor ein paar Tagen ist übrigens die 200.x.y.z Version der Firmware herausgekommen. Die steht für manche E71 schon über den Updater zur verfügung. Ich habe allerdings gestern gelernt, dass Nokia die Updates erst nach und nach für die jeweiligen Geräte frei gibt – wieso auch immer. Meines ist noch nicht darunter.
Vielleicht sollte ich noch etwas zur Sprachqualität sagen. Ich konnte bislang nichts negatives Feststellen. Sowohl am Ohr als auch über die Freisprecheinrichtung lässt es sich gut telefonieren. Das einzig verwirrende ist so ein breites Teil am Ohr zu haben *g*. Erfreulich finde ich v.a., dass die Freisprecheinrichtung erheblich besser funktioniert als die im E51. Im Auto war das E51 z.B. nicht nutzbar, da einfach zu leise. Mit dem E71 sollte das klappen.
Was ich auch noch zu kritteln habe, ist die Antenne im Handy. Ich habe so das Gefühl, dass die -ähnlich wie beim E51- nicht so super effektiv ist. Wahrscheinlich ein Tribut an das 70% Metallgehäuse?
Die Laufzeit des Handies geht für meine Ansprüche in Ordnung. Selbst durch “Extremnutzung” mit GPS, Handysurfen, Modem via Bluetooth, tippen, spielen, ach ja und auch etwas Telefonieren ist der Akku erst nach gut 2 Tagen platt. Im “normalmodus” (ständige Verbindung zum Maildienst, SMS, Telefonieren, mal kurz Handysurfen) hält das E71 lockere 4 Tage.
Mein Fazit ist daher bisher: gutes Handy zum noch (halbwegs) erträglichen Preis.
